1. Swim and boogie board in the gentle Atlantic surf, or try a skimmer board at the water's edge. The offshore sandbar keeps the waves friendly and makes a great playground for kids of all ages.
2. Kayak the ocean or our awesome salt marshes with our friend Michael Gowan and his team at Southeast Adventure Outfitters (1-912-ME-TO-SEA). Michael & co. will introduce you to kayaking in a safe and professional way and you will see things from a perspective that is unbelievable! Call him to arrange short 2 ½ hour trips, or longer excursions to other islands or rivers for the more intrepid souls.
3. Hang out in the Village stroll the Pier and check out what the catch du jour is. Rent gear down the street and wet a hook yourself. The Pier is a great mix of locals and tourists, fish catchers and onlookers: our little island's social center. Relax on one of the benches with your frozen treat and listen to the stories about the one that got away!
4. Golf of course! What's paradise without world-class golf? Try Hampton Point, Sea Island courses, or the St. Simons Island Club. Our favorite is the seaside 9 on St. Simons (even though it's called Sea Island course, it's just 1 ½ miles from BestBeachHouse).
5. Hungry? Go crabbing! Walk just down the street from BestBeachHouse on East Beach Causeway where fabulous blue crab (or stone crab) can be caught, or get really serious and take our crab nets to the Pier. Our secret bait? Chicken necks! Tie 'em on tight, though, because St. Simons crabs are hungry, too!
6. Romance? Tragedy? Drama? Yes, it all happened here. Read about it in Eugenia Price's historical novels (The Beloved Invader is our favorite), then go to Christchurch and walk the ground where a drama of a great but tragic love story was played out.
7. History buff but more macho? Find out how Bloody Marsh got its name. Yikes! Tour Fort Frederica and visit tabby ruins of some of the oldest settlements in the "New World".
8. For breathtaking views (with a breathtaking climb), visit the Coastal Museum at the Lighthouse and climb to the top of the lighthouse itself. It is one of the oldest working lighthouses in the country.
9. The nature museum is only a block from 'Driftwood' in the old Coast Guard Station. Kids and grownups love it. Truly fun and educational.
10. See our beautiful island from a bike. You can bike for
25 miles flat but scenic miles under shady oak trees draped
with Spanish moss. Take your time and stop along the way, perhaps
at Frederica Café for brunch?
11. Shop for true quality and unique treasures with an island flavor at the Tabby House. Located in a restored plantation cabin next to the airfield. Open every day except Sunday. Beach trinkets, funky & fun are yours for next-to-nothing at the great surf shops in the Village. Serious shoppers note: great outlet shopping in Darien on I-95 only 25 minutes north (Coach, Ralph Lauren --need we say more?)
12. Grill your catch at the end of the day on our party deck. If dinner jumped off the hook, call Gisco for fresh seafood. They deliver. Or drive to Harris Teeter and stock up on gourmet groceries.
13. Treat yourself to breakfast where the locals dine. Want drop-dead awesome homemade biscuits? Dressners in the Village is absolutely our favorite. The waitresses will set you straight with tough-love service and your coffee cup will never run dry.
14. In the fall and winter curl up in front of our fireplace (cozy and warm gas logs to warm you after a brisk walk on the beach) while your special someone prepares a mug of something warm for you in our elegant petite kitchen. And if you decide to stay a while longer, well that's OK with us too!
15. Sea turtle nest on our beach from October until the hatchlings return to the sea in April. The right whale calves just off our beach. We have our own eccentric mockingbird just outside. We are blessed with beauty, excitement, and the fun of relaxation with family and friends. Let us share this paradise with you!
